About Carijós Ecological Station

Carijós Ecological Station (Estação Ecológica de Carijós) is a federally protected ecological reserve located on Santa Catarina Island near the city of Florianópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Established in 1987, the station protects approximately 792 hectares of sensitive mangrove forests, salt marshes, and sandbank environments. Its primary goal is ecological research and conservation of the region’s vital coastal ecosystems. The mangroves serve as crucial habitats for diverse fish, crustaceans, and bird species, including migratory shorebirds. Its tidal channels and forests help mitigate coastal erosion and maintain water quality. Visitor access is limited to educational and guided eco-tours, emphasizing minimal human impact. Hiking opportunities are confined mainly to boardwalk trails that meander through its vibrant mangrove habitat, offering excellent chances for wildlife observation and photography. The station forms a vital green buffer against urban growth on the island and supports environmental studies on climate adaptation and marine biology. While camping and fishing are prohibited to protect its fragile ecosystems, visitors can enjoy bird watching and interpretive nature walks during guided visits. Carijós Ecological Station is notable for its role in mangrove preservation and as an educational resource promoting sustainable coastal management in Brazil.
